About This Application

The New Jersey Governor’s “We Value Our Veterans” Community Award recognizes municipalities that actively honor and support veterans through meaningful local initiatives. This application allows towns to document the programs, events, services, and community efforts they provide on behalf of veterans, such as designated parking, local discounts, educational programs, recognition ceremonies, veteran resource listings, and other qualifying activities.

Who Should Complete This Form

This form is intended for New Jersey municipalities seeking recognition for their commitment to honoring and supporting veterans within their community.

Time Required

The application should take approximately 10–20 minutes to complete.

What to Expect After Submitting

Once you submit the form online, you will be contacted by the New Jersey Department of Veterans Affairs within 5 business days with a decision regarding your municipality’s application.

You must have at least 145 initiative points before you can proceed. If you cannot accumulate at least 145 initiative points, then you do not qualify for this award.

Please explain how you implemented your veteran initiatives:

Provide parking spots for Purple Heart Recipients and Disabled Veterans (15 points)

Provide resolutions/ordinances regarding designated spots for Purple Heart Recipients and Disabled Vets

Provide discounts to Veterans at local establishments or offer free discount booklets to Veterans (10 points)

List any establishment that provided a discount as well as the discount amount

Hold quarterly Veterans Round-tables (15 points)

Attach flyers for the Roundtable to this application

Honor Veterans at least quarterly at Council meetings/special events (15 points)

Attach a citation or article related to the honored Veteran at this event

Have local students bring Veteran Family members to speak at school (15 points)

Provide a list of events Veterans spoke at

Hold annual Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies (15 points)

List events the town holds and advertisements pertaining to these events

Provide discounts for community-based recreation (or similar municipal establishment) (15 points)

Provide resolutions/ordinances regarding discounts at relevant municipal establishments

Hold Veteran Service Organization Meet and Greets (15 points)

Attach flyer/advertisement for Meet and Greets

List Veterans resources on the town website (10 points)

Provide the link to the website with Veterans resources

Honor and remember POW/MIA Day and Gold Star Families Day (10 points)

Explain how the town has honored these days and provide any relevant documentation

List Veteran owned businesses on the town website (10 points)

Provide the link to the website listing Veteran owned businesses

Offer scholarships to high school students of military families (15 points)

Provide resolutions/ordinances relating to the scholarship as well as the details (amount,requirements of scholarship and award date)

Volunteerism by municipal staff at Veteran related events (Memorial Day parades, Veteran Service Organization Meet and Greets, etc.) (10 points)

Provide the information of events staff volunteered at, as well as how they were notified ofthe volunteer opportunity

Any initiatives or programs providing mental health resources for Veterans. (15 points)
